Portland Bride & Groom Interviews JOS

Anna Sachse, editor of Portland Bride and Groom interviews Jos Smith for the expert advise column.
MASTER CLASS:
Portland's leading wedding vendors address key issues about the three big-day subjects real brides told us mattered most.

Q: Now that everyone on the planet has a digital camera, some couples may consider having a friend snap their images. Any words of wisdom?

A: Owning a good camera doesn't necessarily mean a person has a good eye. Plus, experienced photographers typically have a team, multiple cameras, seven or more lenses, creative lighting equipment, and backup gear, and they'll put in anywhere from 65 to 120 hours to plan for, creatively shoot, and edit your event. Let the pros carry the burden of capturing all the dimensions of your one-day-only story, and your friends can simply enjoy the party.

Q: What's the best way to figure out if you've found a photographer who meets your needs?

A: Many photographers only showcase their best images on their websites, so you can get a better read on their consistency by asking to see all the images from a typical wedding edit.  You should also ask about everything from their planning process, gear, package particulars, and pricing to what kinds of insurance they have and how they'll back up your files.

Q: Based on your experience with photojournalism, portrait, and fine art photography, what would you say makes for the most successful wedding pictures?

A: Real moments. Lines. Light. Shadows. Reflections. Motion. Negative space. Symmetry. Find a photographer who can creatively manage these eight elements, and you are 75 percent of the way to brilliant images. Other than that, think location, location, location. In an urban environment, it's all about unique architecture. Or, if you prefer a more natural backdrop, try playing around with vintage objects, crafty signs, and organic fabrics.

Q: How can couples best prepare you for a fabulous photo session?

A: In addition to communicating a realistic set of expectations and providing a detailed timeline for the day, couples who really open up and share their vision increase the probability of having a great experience and results. The photographer knows exactly what to shoot but can then take creative risks with the rest of the shots. Also, developing a friendship invites the photographer to become emotionally involved, which may motivate him or her to exceed your expectations.

Q: What are your tips for acquiring fun, original engagement pictures?

A: Pick a location that means something to you, wear clothes that you feel comfortable in, and bring unique and playful props that reflect your personalities, create a mood, invite action, and make for great detailed shots. I had one couple dress up and climb upa mountain to sip champagne and listen to their favorite music as the sun was rising. The possibilities really are endless.
