New Orleans Creative Shoot
New Orleans Creative Shoot
JOS captured these images in New Orleans during a creative “shoot without looking through the view finder” workshop with David Beckstead.
This creative shoot was an extensive exploration of lines, shadows, dramatic bursts of light, texture, negative space, motion, patterns, silhouettes, and mood. We shot from high noon in the French Quarter to early dawn (seriously 4 am) in an enchanting cemetery!
We ran with our adrenaline and walked away exhilarated and renewed with creativity! One must “step back and away to see the lines.
Focusing only on the close up image doesn’t give the viewer a feel for the context,” says David Beckstead. We explored dynamic rays of light and sharp lines to give more dramatic feel, and shot a lot without looking through the view finder!!!
We chased models to capture motion. We sought out negative space in the backdrops to help simplify complexity and direct viewers the eye toward the subject. We laid our cameras in gutters to capture sharp angular lines that gave dramatic lines to the backdrop and subject.
Simple shifts in the lens can open up negative space to allow an image to breathe. We explored layering high and low contrasts, found reflections and silhouetted shadows that gave depth, mood.
We moved into an areas of less intersecting lines while in chaos, looked for negative space and sky, shot through objects to give foreground and background depth, looked for shadowed patterns, back lit subjects and illuminated architectural lines. Cars can be great for flooding back light, but be careful not to get run over, especially in intersections!!!
And above all we looked for the connection within and between the subjects. This was a transformational experience, one that has definitely woven its way into the fabric of my style.
